Chapter 1
“There’s always that pizza place on the corner,” Jessica said as she rolled her eyes. Amy sighed. She knew her friend was right, but working at some fast food joint was the last thing she wanted to do. She had worked too hard for too long to get the accounting degree she had just graduated with to make pizza for a living. The two girls were grabbing lunch at their favorite sandwich shop, browsing the job classifieds as they ate.
Amy Daily had graduated just a couple of months prior, and now the twenty-two year old was growing desperate trying to find somewhere that would hire her. Her friend had been in the same predicament, but Jessica wasn’t nearly as worried about finding a job as Amy was. And why would she be? Jessica had everything simply handed to her in life – in fact, it was her connections at the university that had gotten her the degree she had, not the work that she put into it.
Jessica had spent the last four years of her life going to parties and getting laid – things Amy had never done. Sure, she had tried to go to a party a time or two, but she had never gotten close enough to any guy to actually have sex with him. She was secretly ashamed that she was still a virgin at her age, but it wasn’t anything she was going to share with anyone.
To make it less obvious, Amy chose to secretly watch porn in her free time – giving her enough ideas about sex to be able to sound like she knew what she was talking about whenever the topic came up in conversation. Though she liked to pretend that she was confident and able to handle anything that came her way, she was really nervous and shy around people she didn’t know, making it impossible for her to really get out and get to know people.
“I don’t think you’re going to have much of a choice. You have to eat. And pay rent.” Jessica rolled her eyes and Amy was about to respond when there was suddenly a commotion at the table on the other side of the restaurant. They tried not to notice what was happening, but the raised voices were enough to attract the attention of all who were in the room.
“I don’t give a rat’s ass what you were doing! She’s my daughter and you stay away from her!” the man shouted. The staff in the restaurant were beginning to look at each other, and it was evident they were trying to decide if they ought to break up the argument.
“So you’re going to fire me because I hit on your daughter when she came out of the bathroom? We were at the bar! You think I was the only one checking her out?” the younger man asked with a smirk. The older gentleman dabbed his napkin about his neck, but even from across the room Amy could see his veins bulging and his jaw tensing. Though the conversation was heated, he was still trying to keep his voice under control in spite of the way he felt. There were a few more words passed between them that neither of the girls could hear, then the younger of the men rose and left.
They exchanged a look and Amy shook her head in amazement. The two of them gathered their things and rose from the table, heading for the door. On a sudden impulse, Jessica grabbed her arm and leaned in. “Talk to him!”
“Who?”
“That guy! He just fired the other guy, so he’s bound to have an opening!” Her whisper was hoarse, but fierce.
“I can’t do that!” Amy argued, but Jessica gave her arm a quick squeeze, pushing her more toward the guy. Amy gave her an argumentative look, but Jessica suddenly stopped next to the table.
“I’m sorry, Sir, but we couldn’t help but notice that you were having a bit of a disagreement there.” She smiled, but the man gave her a look.
“What’s it to you?”
“My friend here is in desperate need of a job – and if you have an opening, she would be more than happy to take it.” She yanked Amy closer to the table as she spoke, and the man looked from Jessica to her.
“Is that so?”
“I mean, I’m not even sure where you work,” Amy said nervously. The man sighed as he reached into his pocket and yanked out a card.
“The Lonnie Law Firm; I’m sure you’ve heard of it,” he said. He handed them both a card as Amy and Jessica nodded in agreement. Amy had indeed heard of the law firm, and she wasn’t exactly thrilled at the idea of working there. The entire place was often encompassed in scandals and rumors of scandals, and the last thing she wanted was to be part of that kind of environment. But, with Jessica pushing her to do it, she didn’t know how to decline.
“Give us a call when you’ve got time and set up an appointment.” He grabbed his briefcase and started to slide out of the booth as he spoke while both girls stepped out of the way. Amy had a sinking feeling in her stomach, but she thanked him anyway and slipped the card into her purse. The man didn’t wait to discuss anything with them, pushing past the two girls and heading out the door.
“See? It’s as easy as pie,” Jessica said as she started toward the door. Amy shook her head as she followed her friend out of the restaurant – perhaps Jessica was right – perhaps it would be a good idea to give the law firm a call. The worst that could happen is that they would tell her no, and she really did need them to say yes.
Chapter 2
“Of course, I could be in there within the hour if that works alright for you. Yes, of course. Thank you!” Amy quickly hung up the phone and ran to get her jacket. Her heart was pounding in her chest, and she felt her stomach flop into knots as she quickly dragged the comb through her hair and looked at herself critically in the mirror.
She had just gotten off the phone with the secretary at the Lonnie Law Firm, and to her delight and surprise, she had gotten an interview. The woman asked if she could get in as soon as possible, and though Amy had to blow off hanging out with Jessica again, she told her that she would be in before the hour was out.
She yanked on her boots and grabbed her purse before hurrying out the door, doing her best to slow to a professional walk by the time she reached the sidewalk and hailed a cab. A taxi pulled up quickly, and Amy proudly told him to take her to the law firm. She watched as the buildings dotting the New York City street rushed past, and with each second she rehearsed what she was going to say when she walked into the room.
Of course, nailing the interview was the only thing on her mind. She didn’t care what else happened that day – as long as she walked out of the law firm with the position, she knew she was going to be happy. The taxi pulled up outside the skyscraper, but Amy didn’t even take the time to look up in awe.
She was eager to be inside the top floor, not standing on the ground looking at it. Amy walked through the door with her head held high and her shoulders squared, maintaining the confident attitude she had been taught to have when she was in school. The more she could project confidence and security in who she was and what she could do, the better her chances at getting the job.
“Hold the elevator!” a voice suddenly called, and Amy ignored the urge to press the button faster. She held her hand out the door, and before she knew it, the most handsome man she had ever seen pushed his way through the door.
He was tall and muscular – his fitted suit showing off the work he clearly put in at the gym. He had a strong jawline and dark hair, but eyes that were the color of the sea. She had to check herself to keep from staring.
“Thank you,” he breathed, and she at once noticed how he looked her over from head to toe. She looked down, feeling her cheeks flush with flattery and embarrassment, but she said nothing.
“Where are you headed?” he asked, and she smiled, her cheeks flushing a deeper red.
“I’ve got an interview with the law firm on the top floor,” she replied shyly.
“Really?” he asked, putting a lot of emphasis on the word and looking at her with searching eyes. “I didn’t know they were hiring.”
“I’m not sure what the position is quite yet. I just got out of school for accounting, and that’s what I want, but of course I’m going to take what I can get,” she said. She was speaking quickly and she could see that he appeared to be rather amused.
“Well, I think that is one way to do it for sure – have you ever had an interview like this before?” he asked, and she shook her head.
“We practiced in school, but as you can imagine, doing it for real is a lot different than in class,” she laughed nervously, feeling even more shy now that she could see that this man was interested in her.
“How well did you do in school?” he asked. She didn’t get the impression he was prying, but rather that he seemed to have a genuine interest in her life.
“I finished at the top of my class. You better believe that I worked damn hard to get to the top – pardon my French.” She covered her mouth in embarrassment, and he laughed.
“You might not want to talk like that in the interview room, but I can tell you that it doesn’t bother me out here. If that is the worst word I hear today, I’ll be lucky,” he replied. She smiled and blushed once more.
“What is your name?” he asked and her eyes widened for a moment. As she realized she hadn’t yet introduced herself. Holding her hand out with a nervous smile, she did her best to give him a good handshake as well as make eye contact with him as she did so.
“Amy Daily,” she said with a charming smile. She saw a pleased smile spread across his face as he gave her a firm handshake in return.
“Well, Miss Daily, I guarantee if you walk into that room and act like you have just acted toward me, you are going to get that job without any issues at all.” He smiled warmly, and she felt her heart skip a beat in her chest. She didn’t know what it was about this man, but she was feeling smitten already. She was so nervous, however, she didn’t notice that he didn’t give her his name in the introduction.
“I hear that it’s hard to get in with this firm. To be honest, I am quite surprised that they called me in for an interview in the first place.” She turned her attention back to the door of the elevator, clasping her hands in front of her and drawing herself up to her full height as she did so. It was a nervous habit, standing tall, but it was one that she knew would serve her well in life, so she didn’t bother changing it.
It appeared as though the man was going to say something else, but at that moment, they arrived at the top story and the door chimed.
“Wish me luck,” she said shyly as she smiled at him.
“Don’t worry,” he said confidently. “You’ve got the job – I promise you that.”
Chapter 3
“So you start today?” Jessica’s voice sounded incredulous as it came through the phone, and Amy smiled to herself though her friend couldn’t see her.
“Yep, they said to come on in,” she replied, and Jessica squealed on the other end of the line.
“What position?”
“Something to do with the mail. It’s not what I wanted to do, but it’s going to work for now,” she replied. She had told herself she was going to take any position that was offered to her, and it seemed that was the best she could do. There was a brief pause before Jessica changed the subject.
“And what about that cute guy you met in the elevator?” Amy rolled her eyes. She had mentioned her interaction to her friend, who was more interested in the man than she was in the job itself.
“I don’t know. I don’t know who he was and I honestly don’t care. He must work there – so I guess I’ll find out,” she said. Jessica laughed.
“Perhaps this time you’ll do a little more than say ‘hi’,” she teased. Amy shook her head. She had more on her mind than flirting with some random lawyer she met in the elevator – she had to keep this job. After wrapping up the conversation, she hung up the phone and headed down to the office. She had to make a good impression on her first day.
* * *
Although Amy was determined to do well at the Lonnie Law Firm, she soon learned that the job wasn’t going to be as easy as she thought. Her job was to primarily sort the mail that came into the office and take care of the different files, taking them to the proper desks and distributing them to the right lawyers.
Of course, she was disappointed to find that her job was going to be so easy – but her nerves soon got in the way and she started making mistakes. She would put the wrong files in the wrong places, or not taking the files that she was supposed to take to the right lawyers. It was true, everyone in the firm was nice to her and patient with the mistakes that she made, she was feeling nervous and discouraged.
In addition, Amy was feeling frustrated. This wasn’t that awesome career move she had in mind. She felt like there was no inspiration beyond her minature pay check. As the day wore on, she began to feel that she was going to be fired from the position, which would only make the discouragement she was feeling greater than it was. And, to make matters worse, she learned that the man she had so terribly flirted with was Roland Carr – the step-son of Larry Lonnie. As Larry was considered the greatest lawyer of all time, Roland had no problem strutting around the office as though it was he himself that owned it. He was a flirt to every woman in there, but to Amy he seems to have a special fire burning for her.
She tried to ignore him, but he had this way of commanding the room when he entered. At times he would dominate her imagination leaving little room for responsibilities. She just couldn’t ignore the way he would look at her – or deny the fact that she greatly enjoyed it. But, not even all his attention was enough to keep her from wanting to call it quits at the end of the day.
“So what did you think? Glad you got the job!” Roland said as she was gathering his things. She blushed but avoided eye contact, trying to focus more on the last things she had to do than the gorgeous man who was paying attention to her.
“I uh- I’m not sure that I’m cut out for this job to be perfectly honest.” She tried to smile, but she could feel her lip quivering. The truth was, she wanted to run away somewhere and cry.
“You don’t mean that your quitting!” Roland spoke with a level of horror in his voice that was almost convincing. She gave him a look as she paused.
“I mean, if I’m not good at the job, what’s the point? It would be better than getting fired,” she replied dryly.
“Pfft, you aren’t going to get fired!” he said with a laugh. She shook her head, but he wasn’t going to let up.
“Just give it another couple of days. Please?” The look he gave her was so sincere, Amy couldn’t help but believe that he was genuinely asking her to stay. She wanted to turn him down and tell him that she didn’t have it in her, but there was something in her that told her not to. She shrugged.
“What the Hell, I’ll give it a couple more days,” she said. She was surprised to see how much his face lit up.
“Excellent!” he said.
Amy gave him a weak smile and a curt nod and hurried out of the firm, doubting that it was going to make any real difference. But, she was going to give it another shot anyway. And, as it turned out, he was right.
By the end of the third day, Amy wasn’t sure what she wanted to do. Things were going well for her, but it wasn’t what she wanted to do with her life. Anyone could pass faxes and follow the Fed-ex man around the office. She had a degree in accounting, and she wanted to use it – even if she did have a different job. As she was wrapping up for the day, she was surpri
sed when she was called into Roland’s office.
“You wanted to see me?” she asked as she walked into the room. He smiled and motioned for her to sit down.
“Yes, I did,” he replied. “Close the door.”
Amy obeyed, but she couldn’t help but raise her eyebrows as she walked in and sat down in the chair across from him. Roland had a pile of papers on the desk in front of him, and he looked up with a smile as she sat down.
“I’ve been hearing the best things about you from every department head in the building, Miss Daily,” he said as he looked down at the papers in front of him. Amy gave him a weak smile, though there was little heart in it. She thanked him, but nothing could prepare her for what he had to say next.
“How would you feel about a promotion?”
Chapter 4
Amy was nearing the end of her second week at the firm, and now that she had been promoted to a mid-level accountant, she was loving every second of her job. Her pay had nearly tripled along with her new position, but it was the fact she was working so closely with Roland himself that made her love her job so much.
Amy tried to tell herself that it was necessary for her to be spending so much time with Roland because of the job, though everyone in the office knew that it had nothing to do with her position. If she were to stick with her job, she would have been stuck in a closet cubicle looking out a window that faced a brick wall.
Instead, Amy worked more as a personal assistant. The accountant duties were minimal, running errands for Roland and making personal stops along the way. They had exchanged phone numbers – insisting that it was for business purposes at first, but texting each other for really any reason they could find to do so. He had even taken to texting her his coffee order in the morning, and she would pick it up on her way to the office.
Of course, she told herself that the other employees didn’t notice her walking into the room with two coffees in her hand, or the fact that she walked straight into Roland’s office first thing.
